A good friend of mine is has always been a fan of make-up and all things girly. She actually enjoys spending 2 hours in the salon, she gets manicures every other week, and I can’t remember the last time I saw her in jeans or flats. While we enjoy speaking with each other and doing things together, I don’t understand her superficial attitude towards fashion and her appearance, her obsession with anything that’s pink, or her ability to sit in front of her computer monitor for 2 or 3 hours straight watching Youtube “gurus.”
The last time I checked, a guru referred to a teacher- an intellectual who is a leader and expert in a certain field. I just don’t understand how people could use this word for a bunch of shallow girls on the internet who’s videos are mainly just hauls. I’m not saying that I don’t watch “beauty gurus,” but when I occasionally do, the girls that I like are at least intelligent and know what they’re doing. You don’t have to go to school to be knowledgeable, but there’s a big difference in being instructional and creative versus not knowing the specifics of what you’re doing and making videos just so you can partner with Youtube, become popular and make money. If that’s what you’re really about, I feel you should just be up front about it.
I hate people who claim that they are huge on fashion and designing when they don’t even know how to properly operate a sewing machine or even recognize the importance and aesthetic quality of creating jewelry and clothes. Just because you like to shop and you’re obsessed with following trends (because you lack creativity and you care about what people think of you that much), that doesn’t mean that you understand fashion. I’m just sick of seeing and hearing about “gurus” so much. There’s so many more worthwhile, more knowledgeable people out there who blog and post videos about the same subject matter without being completely obnoxious and superficial about it.
